I’m not sure exactly when the whole “list” fad began, but they’ve since taken over the internet. My newsfeed constantly populates with Buzzfeed lists, and there’s no doubt that because of this, my attention span has reached an all time low.
Somehow, I have a feeling that I’m not the only one who feels this way. That being said, here’s a list of reasons why lists are still cool.
1. Intriguing Titles
Doesn’t matter what the list is about. The titles are short and to-the-point, generating curiosity among users.
2. TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)
It’s sad, but it’s true. Our attention span as a society has reached a point where skimming is winning. Technology made it this way. We want and get our information stat. We look for what’s in bold. We abbreviate. Lists provide readers the luxury of skipping what doesn’t interest them.
3. Because SEO is Still Cool
Lists are built for search engine optimization. Search engine bots love bullets and numbers. Throw in some good headings and solid key phrases, and your post is en route to the top of search results.
Animated GIFs never fail to entertain. Just look at all the emotions you can express.
One of the biggest factors in the success of a viral list post is its relatability to the user. They’re enjoyable because we can usually nod our way down the list and associate each item with a someone we know or a particular memory. A list post is essentially just a longer, more entertaining way to say, “AmIRite?” ….Am I right?
